These on-entry assessment materials will support practitioners to set up appropriate classroom provision, including resources, within the reception classroom, to enable them to make relevant observations of what children know, understand and can do on entry to school.
The materials offer prompts across all seven areas of learning and development and the characteristics of effective learning.
Sample activities are provided across six areas of provision to support practitioners to engage children in open-ended but purposeful activities.
These materials can be used alongside other baseline assessment activities, and will support early years practitioners in making an accurate judgement of a child’s skills, knowledge and understanding on entry to reception.
** This booklet was written to support practitioners with setting up their provision to enable effective observational assessments to be carried out. Under the current climate and in response to the COVID 19 crisis practitioners will need to bear in mind and follow the latest DfE guidance on planning for a safe return to the classroom including safety, cleaning, social distancing and class organisation, etc.
