Course Objectives

• To consider how to develop manageable systems for supporting non specialists teaching mathematics
• To consider strategies and resources to ensure consistently good standards of teaching across mathematics
• To consider strategies and resources to develop non specialists' mathematical subject knowledge and pedagogical practice.

In many schools, particularly those in more challenging circumstances, it is difficult to fully staff a mathematics department with subject specialists. Ensuring non specialists can develop students' mathematical understanding and skills is key to ensuring good outcomes for students.

Many subject leaders find themselves in a position where they need to support non specialists on a regular basis. Often with different teachers delivering mathematics each year.

The strategies and resources discussed on this course aim to make the process easier for a subject leader to manage and to support a subject leader in attaining a consistently high standard of teaching and learning across their department.
Much of this work would also be useful to a subject leader dealing with persistent use of supply staff.
