Course Objectives

• To examine the importance of practical and visual modelling in supporting children’s understanding of mathematics.
• To explore a variety of mathematical concepts using practical and visual approaches.
• To consider progression in learning using concrete and pictorial representations prior to abstract mathematics.

The Ofsted Inspection Handbook states that ‘inspectors will consider how well teaching fosters mathematical understanding of new concepts and methods.’

This course will support teachers in securing conceptual understanding through the use of practical and visual approaches.
The sessions will focus on common areas that children find difficult, in particular place value, calculations, fractions and problem solving.
