Course Objectives

• To develop an understanding of the terminology used in current primary teaching of phonics and in the basic skills of enunciation, blending and segmentation of phonemes.
• To review the progression in the phonics phases as demonstrated in “Letters and Sounds”, planning for the daily teaching sequence and the outcomes expected for children.
• To secure an understanding of the recommended teaching sequence and approaches to assessment as advocated in Letters and Sounds.

This course is particularly suitable for newly qualified teachers or those returning to teaching, being designed to give an understanding of phonics progression through Letters and Sounds. Practical activities and opportunity to explore assessment at each phase will support delegates in developing their own practice.
