Course Objectives

This course will be suitable for Year 2 or Year 3 teachers considering delivering ‘lost phonics learning’ in light of the current situation.

As an alternative to face to face training, the English team are offering online CPD via video conferencing.

Bounce Back Phonics is a 15 week programme based on Letters and Sounds which has been developed to support children in Y2 and KS2 who need further support in phonics for reading and writing. It is an intervention programme designed to address gaps in learning. This half day course explores the principles behind the programme and exemplifies practical delivery of the sessions. The programme is based on assessment of current phonic ability and the assessment tool provided will help to identify the GPCs and tricky words which need to be taught, or revisited, based on the needs of the group, or individuals.

The National Curriculum 2014 for Y3/4 states ‘pupils who are still struggling to decode need to be taught to do this urgently through a rigorous and systematic phonics programme so that they catch up rapidly with their peers. If they cannot decode independently and fluently, they will find it increasingly difficult to understand what they read and to write down what they want to say.’ pg 33

Bounce Back Phonics focuses on specific aspects of phonic learning that pupils may not have secured. The programme will be beneficial if children are experiencing difficulties within Phases 4 and 5 with:

• blending for reading and segmenting for spelling;
• selecting the correct spelling for long vowel phonemes;
• reading and spelling multisyllabic words containing adjacent consonants.

The 15 week programme consists of three sessions each week and comprehensive lesson plans for all sessions are included.

Ideally, the course should be attended by the class teacher and the person who will be delivering the programme.
